Supreme Court Imposes Permanent, Reviewable Prison Sentence on Murderer of Marta Calvo and Two Other Women

The Supreme Court sentenced Jorge Ignacio Palma, the author of the murder of the young Valencian Marta Calvo, whose body has not yet been found, to a permanent and revisable prison sentence. In addition, it increased to 140,000 euros the compensation that he must pay to her parents as civil liability for the murder of her daughter. The Supreme Court also confirmed a sentence of 137 years in prison for the death of the two other women, Arliene. Ramos. and Lady Marcela Vargas, and the attempt of six other people during the sexual intercourse they had with Jorge Ignacio with cocaine consumption between June 2018 and November 2019. In this way, the court partially upheld the appeal of the private accusations against the conviction. of the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) which, like a jury court of the Court of Valencia, imposed a single sentence for the three murders committed and did not apply the permanent revisable prison requested by the charges for the murder of Marta Calvo – a young woman who disappeared in November 2019 after meeting the convicted person -, who was the third committed. The Chamber considers that this maximum prison sentence for a third crime can be imposed on “serial killers” who, in the same process, trial and sentence, they have already been convicted of murder twice, as is the case in this case. The court concludes that the requirements of article 140.2 of the Penal Code are met, which provides for the imposition of the sentence “on a person convicted of murder who has been convicted of the death of more than two people”: a crime plus two previous ones In summary, the court states, the proven facts describe that the convict met women to have, in exchange for a price, sexual relations, but he introduced cocaine in large quantities through their sexual organs against their will and without their consent. This caused the death of the three victims and was about to do the same with six others who were able to save their lives by going to the hospital before the cocaine caused the effect it had on the three women it killed.
