Taiwanese chief of staff complains to US senator about China

During a meeting with US Senator Jeff Merkley, Taiwanese Chief of Staff Lai Qingde highlighted the ongoing threat posed by China. This is reported by RIA Novosti.

“Taiwan has changed a lot in the last 24 years, but what hasn’t changed is the growing threat from China. “Taiwan will stand with dignity and maintain the status quo to maintain regional peace and stability.” Lai Qingde said.

He added that Taiwan will always adhere to a free and democratic constitutional system.

“We will adhere to the fact that Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China do not belong to the same jurisdiction.” Lai Qingde further said.

Beijing has consistently stated that adherence to the “one China” principle is a prerequisite for other states wishing to establish or maintain diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.
