Taylor Swift, one of the biggest stars in the music industry, endorsed Kamala Harris for US president shortly after the debate ended.
“I think she is a confident and talented leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are guided by calm rather than chaos,” Swift wrote in an Instagram post that included a link to a voter registration site.
Swift is hugely popular among young women, a key demographic in the November election, and ticket sales for her latest tour topped $1 billion. Within half an hour, the post had received more than 2.3 million likes.
She included a photo of herself posing with her cat Benjamin Button and captioned the post: “The childless cat lady.” This caption is a reference to comments made three years ago by JD Vance, the US vice presidential candidate for Donald Trump’s team. He then said that childless women do not have the same stake in the future of the country.

Swift wrote that her support was in part due to Trump’s decision to post AI-generated photos of the singer. In one of these photos, Swift was dressed as Uncle Sam and the caption on the image read: “Taylor wants YOU to vote for DONALD TRUMP.”
Trump’s posts “have led me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter,” Swift wrote. She added that she “did my research and made my decision.”
Swift’s decision comes as no surprise. In 2020, she endorsed US President Joe Biden and also supported Harris during her debate with then-Vice President Mike Pence. She has also been an outspoken critic of Trump, saying he is fanning the “fires of white supremacy and racism.”
Swift is popular nationwide, but especially among Democrats. An October 2023 Fox News poll found that 55% of voters, including 68% of Democrats, had a favorable view of Swift. Republicans were split, with 43% offering a favorable view and 45% an unfavorable view.
