Teenager commits deadly school shooting in US

A 14-year-old gunman opened fire at a high school in the US state of Georgia yesterday, killing at least four people, including two students, and wounding nine others, according to law enforcement.

The shooter, also a student at the school, was arrested. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says he will be charged with murder and tried as an adult.

Two teachers were also among the dead.

The shooting occurred near the town of Winder, about 70 kilometers northeast of Atlanta, the state capital.

According to the Atlanta FBI and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Gray was questioned by authorities last year in connection with “several anonymous messages regarding online threats to carry out a school shooting at an unspecified time and location.” There were no grounds for arrest at the time.

Schoolgirl Leela Sayarath said the shooter left the classroom at the start of algebra class around 9:45 a.m. When he returned near the end of class, he knocked to come back in. Another student went to answer the door, but Lila said she noticed a gun on a classmate and didn’t open the door. She said the shooter walked into a nearby classroom and opened fire.

There have been at least 384 mass shootings in the United States this year that killed or injured at least four people, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA).

Gun violence has killed at least 11,557 people in the United States this year, according to GVA.
