There have been earthquakes of magnitude less than 1.1 between 8 and 12 kilometers deep
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) detected in the early hours of this Thursday, between 4 and 7 a.m., a seismic swarm with at least 500 earthquakes southwest of Pico Viejo, in El Teide.
It is about the same area in which these episodes were recorded in recent years, such as those recorded in October 2016, June 2019 and June and July 2022.
The activity began with a series of 10 earthquakes of magnitude less than 1.1 between 8 and 12 kilometers deep in the area, followed by long-duration signals, without defined seismic phases and with high frequency content, then leaving room for a long series of hundreds of events of small magnitude and of the same magnitude, which occur at almost regular time intervals, in the form of a “drumbeat”, explained IGN.
Due to the weakness of the seismic parameters recorded, earthquakes of lower magnitude were detected by the automatic system but were not located with sufficient quality to be included in the official IGN catalog, he specifies.
