Ten fashion exhibitions for a stylish return to school

There’s no denying the success of fashion in museums: as the 2024 school year begins, public institutions and brands are ramping up their energy to present exhibitions of all kinds. And there’s something for everyone!

High-tech suits

This is the first monograph dedicated to Yuima Nakazato, a Japanese designer born in 1985 who is officially part of the Paris haute couture calendar. The Cité de la Lace et de la Mode in Calais (Pas-de-Calais) was interested in her spectacular outfits, which are somewhat reminiscent of those of Iris van Herpen, in a more modest version. Yuima Nakazato uses recycled materials and waste, but also develops the technological aspect with 3D printing and textile fibres obtained from fermented bacteria. Through a set designed with the designer, the exhibition presents around sixty garments, accessories and sketches that provide an insight into the exotic world of this fashion inspired by nature.

“Yuima Nakazato. Beyond Sewing”, until 5 January 2025, at the Cité de lalace et de la mode (Calais).

Weightless creators

Twenty exceptional pieces of furniture and objects by Shiro Kuramata (1934-1991) presented alongside twenty haute couture creations by Azzedine Alaïa (1935-2017) is the programme of this first exhibition on design at the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation in Paris. “To escape the rag”, In his own words, the French-Tunisian couturier collected furniture by Shiro Kuramata, whose lightness, humour and passion for sculpture he appreciated. Together their works display a common desire for abstraction: the disappearance of lines in one corresponds to the search for invisible seams in the other, while the irregular shapes of a shelf evoke the swaying of the hips provided by a strapless dress. The face-to-face works surprisingly well.

“Alaïa/Kurumata. Lightness in creation”, until January 12, at the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation (Paris 4my).

The art of turning your jacket inside out

Keen to attract French customers, Printemps is relaunching fashion exhibitions in its flagship store on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris. The first to date is dedicated to the jacket. This wardrobe centrepiece is often a designer’s signature, such as Christian Dior’s corolla-shaped Bar jacket or Thierry Mugler’s shoulder-padded jacket. Under the colourful dome of a 19th-century buildingmy century, the 550-square-metre tour is divided into eight sections, which detail the types and uses of this garment. Workshops (by prior reservation) in collaboration with the Esmod school complete the course to understand how to make a jacket or witness its transformation.
