Ten Madrid hospitals are once again on the list of the best health centres in the world

Ten hospitals of the public network of the Community of Madrid have repeated themselves in the world ranking of the best centers by specialties in the last reference ranking prepared by the prestigious American magazine ‘Newsweek’ and, in addition, they have climbed in positions compared to last year.

Specifically, the hospitals of La Paz, Gregorio Marañón, 12 de Octubre, Clínico San Carlos, Ramón y Cajal, Puerta de Hierro, La Princesa, Niño Jesús, Fundación Jiménez Díaz and Infanta Leonor appear in the “Best Specialized Hospitals in the World 2025” of this magazine, which recognizes the most outstanding centers internationally in 12 areas of medicine.

Among the public hospitals of the Community of Madrid, the study distinguishes La Paz with the 17th place worldwide among the best in urology and the 22nd in orthopedic surgery and traumatology; Gregorio Marañón manages to rank 20th in the international ranking in pneumology; and Child Jesus, 25th worldwide in the pediatric specialty.

In addition, the public health system of Madrid manages to deepen its improvement by climbing in its hospitals compared to last year, where the jumps registered in cardiology by Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda and 12 de Octubre stand out, both progressing 200 positions in the ranking: The Majariego hospital climbs 157 places to reach number 138 in the world, while that of the south of the capital advances 44 to reach number 83.

In all the medical disciplines analyzed by Newsweek, there are hospitals of the Madrid Health Service (Sermas) and in eight of them they are at the top of the whole of Spain, even ahead of the private sector complexes.

Thus, La Paz is the first in the country in oncology, cardiology, urology, as well as orthopedic surgery and traumatology, while Gregorio Marañón is the first in cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and pulmonology. Likewise, the Niño Jesús Children’s Hospital is the national leader in pediatrics.

New recognitions for four hospitals

In addition, four other public hospitals in Madrid have managed to be recognised this year in specialities where they did not appear a year ago: Ramón y Cajal, in neurology; Puerta de Hierro, in oncology; on 12 October, in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology; as well as the Jiménez Díaz Foundation, in endocrinology and also in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology.

The results of this ranking are based on the opinions and recommendations of thousands of health experts (doctors and other health professionals, as well as managers) participating in a survey conducted from May to July 2024.

Also in relevant quality certifications and accreditations in each discipline and user satisfaction indicators such as patient reported outcome measures (PROMs).

Each year, Newsweek selects the 300 best hospitals in cardiology and oncology, 250 in pediatrics, 150 in cardiac surgery, endocrinology, digestive surgery, orthopedics and traumatology and pulmonology, 125 in neurology, neurosurgery and urology and 100 in gynecology and obstetrics.

Seven, among the most intelligent

On the other hand, seven hospitals in the Madrid public network appear on the list that rewards complexes with new cutting-edge technologies such as telemedicine, artificial intelligence (AI) or robotics (World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2025).

In this case, seven centres of the Madrid Health Service are included among the 350 chosen worldwide: three of them are among the top 100 – Gregorio Marañón (58), La Paz (70) and 12 de Octubre (73), all up from the previous year -, as well as the Clínico San Carlos, the Fundación Jiménez Díaz, the Infante Leonor and Ramón y Cajal (all between 100 and 350).
