The Department of Territorial Cohesion of the Government of Navarra will invest 2.2 million euros in the construction and improvement of almost 60 kilometers of cycle paths in the Provincial Community.
Thus, the General Directorate of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has resolved the 2024 call which will allow action in more than twenty Navarrese municipalities. The more than 2.2 million euros from the call for aid will be distributed between 13 proposed actions by 23 local entities for the construction or development of cycle paths.
This is the town halls of Abaigar, Asín, Ancín, Aranguren, Beriáin, Cadreita, Santesteban, Elgorriaga, Galar, Ituren, Legaria, Lekunberri, Lesaka, Lumbier, Marcilla, Mendigorria, Murieta, Oco, Puente la Reina, Tudela and Zubieta, the council of Labega and the Sakana Commonwealth.
The projects, some of which will be executed jointly by several local entities, are: project of alternatives to the development of the Eurovélo routes 1 and 3 (mandate of Cendea de Galar and Beriáin); cycle path in Mutilva; conditioning of the sustainable mobility cycle route sakana (Ziordia-Urdiain section); river walk around the Ega river in Abaigar, Ancín, Legaria, Murieta and Oco; development of the “Uraren Bidea” road as a cycle path in Zubieta, Ituren, Elgorriaga and Santesteban; adaptation of the roads and signage of the Vera Cruz road to Cadreita; cycle path on the El Molinar de Tudela highway (phase 1); Walk on the Urraba River in Lesaka; development and signage of a river walk around the Arga river between Puente la Reina and Mendigorria; pedestrian promenade on the Aragon River in Marcilla; improvement of cycling infrastructure in Lekunberri; sidewalk and cycle path on the NA-718 highway between Larrión and Amillano, and the Northern Lumbier cycle connectivity project: Irubide-Irati natural path connection.
The total budget planned for the actions subject to subsidy is 3,217,930 euros and is expected to be completed by next year. At the same time, the grants awarded reach up to 80% of the expenses of each project, up to a limit of 350,000 euros per file.
The Director General of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Berta Miranda, expressed “the strong commitment of the Department of Cohesion to ecologically sustainable mobility”. “We must contribute to the structuring of the territory, support new forms of mobility, encourage and raise awareness of the use of bicycles, not only for its obvious ecological component, but also for the benefits it brings to a healthy life”, he indicated. .
So, from the General Directorate of Transport and Sustainable Mobility They expressed their intention to reiterate next year the call for the creation of cycle paths in local entities. The idea is that the amount of the call, still to be specified, for the cycle paths which will be built in 2026, is “similar to the current one”.
Alongside the actions carried out with local entities, associations and municipalities, the project Navarra budgets for 2025 includes a budget of 1.8 million, which includes actions such as the cycle path that will connect Burlada, Huarte and Sarriguren, which has a budget of 1.5 million and is currently in the execution phase.
Likewise, the cycle path between Pamplona and Cizur Menor, In call for tenders, it has a budget of 1.9 million euros. In addition, next year’s budgets include agreements with associations that promote sustainable mobility; aid for the repair and maintenance of bicycles and funds for actions in favor of sustainable mobility.
All applications submitted were evaluated based on the criteria of the call, among which connectivity with other municipalities, with Greenways-EuroVeloCamino de Santiago, with industrial zones or educational, health, educational or leisure centers; population size and number of inhabitants; intermodality for its connection with intercity public transport stops; the quality of the proposal based on traffic segregation and route characteristics; the maturity of the project, depending on whether it is a working project or an evaluated report; and whether it represents added value in areas such as sustainability, environment or tourist attraction, among others.
