THE “La Caixa” Foundation selected 29 new projects biomedical research of Excellency with great social impact within the call CaixaResearch for health research 2024who has a endowment of 25.7 million euros. These projects will be developed in research centers, hospitals And universities of Spain And Portugal.
This year the appeal received 580 proposals of fundamental research, clinical And translationalfocused on areas such as infectious diseases (7 projects), oncology (6), cardiovascular and metabolic diseases (5), and neuroscience (5). Additionally, they were selected 6 projects which will develop enabling technologies to meet these challenges.
Among the selected projects are research aimed at new strategies against tuberculosisthe treatment of heart diseaseTHE liver disease associated with obesitythe creation of a synthetic retina For recover vision in people with retinitis pigmentosathe study of parasite cause of the sleeping sicknessand the generation of human organs in animals of stem cells.
The assistance offered amounts to 500,000 euros for individual projects and even 1 million euros for collaborative initiatives between 2 and 5 organizations. All projects will have a deadline of up to 3 years for its execution.
This year, the selected projects are carried out by scientists from 11 Spanish centers And 6 Portugueseand some of the consortium’s projects benefit from the collaboration of international research groups of The Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, Italy, Israel And Australia.
The aid delivery ceremony took place at CaixaForum Madridin the presence of representatives of “La Caixa” Foundationas well as the Luçon Foundation and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Juan Ramón Fuertes, deputy general director of the “la Caixa” Foundation, emphasized that this ceremony is not only a recognition of the selected projects, but also an opportunity for researchers to establish scientific synergies and collaborations for the benefit of the future of health.
The call was launched in collaboration with the FCT from Portugal, which contributed 2.9 million euros to subsidize three of the nine selected Portuguese projects. It also benefits from the support of Luçon Foundationwhich co-finances a project on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
