The accused in the death of the Areal Street teacher admits his guilt

The only person charged in the death of Professor Benito Torreiro, 69, on Christmas 2021 He admitted his guilt on Monday through his lawyer, coinciding with the first session of the trial for this crime. The prosecution requests 11 years in prison against David Macía, 24, for the crimes of homicide and continuous fraud, in light of what happened from the moment the young man arrived at the victim’s home to sharing dinner, until Torreiro’s body was found in the middle of a pool of blood. He received a violent blow to the head with a marble ball and They had stabbed him twenty times. That’s what the prosecutor said yesterday, and that’s how the only person being prosecuted in this case will accept it.

The representative of the Public Ministry admitted yesterday before the popular jury that the death of the professor was “brutal and shocking”, but also that the damage has been repaired. He was referring to the compensation that Macía had already paid to the victim’s heirs, around 37,000 euros, and which favored the agreement reached by the defense and the prosecution so that the sentence would be limited to 11 years. The private prosecution, for its part, is asking for 18 years in prison for what it considers to be a crime of murder, and not manslaughter, which it invokes in the alternative.

The trial before a popular court, which must take place despite the agreement, will take place all this week in Vigo. He will explain the details not only of the professor’s death, the trigger for which, presumably, was a money dispute with the accused – with whom he had a sort of romantic relationship – but also the days of excess which followed the crime. Because, according to the investigation carried out in the following months, Macía sent several messages from the cell phone of the deceased announcing that he would be offline for a few days and, with the field cleared, he dedicated himself to openly emptying his accounts . “It was melted – revealed the family lawyer – 10,000 euros of nonsense.”

Nights at the hotel, dinners with friends, clubs and even an Audi were some of the whims the accused indulged in until the officers caught him. The economic motive on which the first investigations were based was supported yesterday by the prosecutor in charge of the case, who indicated that “Logically, the fight started over credit cards.“. The defense, for its part, attempted to introduce an alleged psychological alteration as a mitigating circumstance. The only trick in play: the accused’s DNA was found at the scene, notably on one of the knives in the house, and analysis of the movements of his mobile phone located him in the area on the day of crime. “Tomorrow (today), when his turn comes to testify, he will recognize it again,” the alleged perpetrator’s lawyer announced yesterday.
