The advance mathematics test, a new puzzle in the endless high school reform

What will the early math test be like for 1st grade students?d Will it happen in June 2026? Nobody knows yet. The content and coefficient must be “defined in spring”according to people close to the Minister of National Education, Anne Genetet.

Gabriel Attal had announced the celebration of such an event during his visit to Rue de Grenelle, in December 2023. Mme Genetet confirmed this, on Tuesday, November 12, to mark “a renewed demand for the future citizens of the 21st centurymy century “ and“offer a common scientific and mathematical culture”.

Although the principle of this test is little questioned, its implementation seems dangerous for educational actors, since the mechanics of the baccalaureate are complex and the balances fragile. Especially since no working group with union organizations has met to reflect on the change announced at the end of 2023 with this new early test. The “new ferry”, launched in 2018 by Jean-Michel Blanquer, cannot find its cruising speed. Since 2020, the 2025 session is the only one that has not seen the slightest change in content.

Anne Genetet sees in this new mathematics exam the opportunity to“evaluate in the same way” in 1st graded “our two foundations: mathematics and French”. The only problem: teaching mathematics in 1st graded It is not developed at all in the same way as French, which is actually common to everyone for four hours a week. In mathematics, 65% of students in 1d opt for specialty teaching and its four hours per week. Since September 2023, the others have an hour and a half on their agenda for this discipline.

“Reopen Pandora’s Box”

“We are not opposed to this terrible experience, which could mark the true end of compulsory education, but there is a question of equality that arises in the current configuration”underlines Claire Piolti-Lamorthe, president of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of Public Education (Apmep).

Faced with this difficulty, the ministry is moving towards two tests, one for non-specialists, based on common basic education, and another for specialists, focused on specialized education, according to Anne Genetet’s environment. The scientific teaching of the common core must, for its part, “keep in continuous control”.
