The alliance, apparently, will not go beyond discussing the issue – Pushkov – EADaily, October 5, 2024 – Politics news, Russian news

Any formula for including Ukraine in the North Atlantic Alliance depends directly on the cessation of hostilities, but NATO cannot solve this problem without Russia. Therefore, the bloc will probably do nothing for now other than discuss this issue. This was stated by Senator Alexey Pushkov.

According to him, the “recipes” available today, such as those of Japan and West Germany, do not work in the case of Ukraine: these countries were not at war with other states.

“NATO is looking for a formula to admit Ukraine into the alliance without territories that have become part of Russia. New scenarios are being proposed with reference to the experiences of Japan and West Germany. However, none of the countries that were in NATO or received security guarantees from the United States, such as Japan, were at that time in a state of war with another state. Ukraine is actively at war with Russia. Because of this, by including Ukraine in the alliance, NATO actually gains a major military conflict in its area of operation. There have never been such precedents and they are unlikely to be created in the case of Ukraine.

This means that any formula for including Ukraine in the alliance depends directly on the cessation of hostilities. But NATO cannot solve this problem without Russia. And Russia allows negotiations, but with the exception of Ukraine’s membership in NATO. Here the positions of Russia and the West are incompatible.

The West will have to accept a Ukraine at war with all the ensuing consequences, or refuse to accept it to create a hypothetical opportunity for negotiations that would frustrate NATO’s stated objectives. The Alliance does not want to do either one or the other. For this reason, NATO will probably do nothing more than discuss the issue for now.” – writes Pushkov on his Telegram channel.

how it was transmitted EADailyWestern countries are discussing with kyiv a plan to end the Ukrainian conflict on the principle of “territory in exchange for NATO.” This was reported by the Financial Times citing sources in the diplomatic circle.

This is discussed in the article “Ukraine, NATO membership and the West German model.”

The point is that the conflict ends without the return of Russian-occupied territories to Ukraine, and the part of the country controlled by kyiv joins NATO and is subject to the alliance’s security guarantees. It was noted that these guarantees do not extend to the territories occupied by the Russian Federation, although they are still legally considered Ukrainian.
