The appearance of Bonilla potatoes on the Oprah show boosts the brand’s sales

Not only the viewers, but also the A Coruña company itself, were surprised by the inclusion of its cans among the products recommended by the American presenter. Oprah Winfrey on its program, a tradition that it has maintained since the 90s and the effects were immediate: according to the company, in just one hour after the live broadcast it received. Orders of 4,000 cans coming from all over the North American country.

First, on the 1st of this month, the presenter and businesswoman made public her list of recommended products, including the traditional can of Bonilla a la Vista. An “unprecedented” recommendation, stand out from the brand, taking into account that “in all these years only [se ha incluido] another Spanish product”; and a news that the Galician company, with almost a century of experience, welcomed with “joy” and which, in itself, boosted recent sales of its products in the United States.

“But no one inside the factory in the Sabón industrial zone, in Arteixo, expected what happened on Monday,” when the full program was broadcast, they say. During the sixty minutes that the broadcast lasted, sales multiplied exponentially to approach 4,000 boxes of chips sold, “a record” that the factory management is delighted with and which, it hopes, will serve to strengthen its presence on the American market.

This is the last time, but it is not the first time, that the brand’s flagship product, chips, has taken the big leap internationally. In the 90s, one of their bags appeared in a photo shoot for Maison Balmain, and in 2020, another of the beloved iconic cans an appearance in the Oscar-winning film Parasites, which already at that time “revolutionized the internationalization of the product”.

Today, the brand celebrates its “boom” in sales on the other side of the Atlantic, but emphasizes that Its “main market” remains Spain, and “especially” the Galician: “We will never lose sight of this, but in recent years the international market has experienced strong growth, and this increase in the United States makes us particularly happy.”
