The Baku Global Climate Transparency Platform, an initiative of the COP29 presidency, was presented

The launch of the COP29 Presidency’s Baku Global Climate Transparency Platform (GTP) took place within the framework of the Central Asia, South Caucasus and Eastern Europe region event on the preparation of Biennial Transparency Reports (BTR) in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

Oku.Az The International Development Assistance Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (AIDA), the Kazakhstan International Development Agency (KazAID), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) participated in the training seminar. In total, more than 50 experts responsible for the preparation of BTPs for the mentioned region participated in the training seminar. The fact that Kazakhstan is hosting the event is an indication of the importance attached to the COP, which will be held for the first time in our region, in the regional context.

At the opening ceremony of the event, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Umayra Taghiyeva spoke and informed about Azerbaijan’s COP29 presidency and global initiatives implemented within this framework, including BTP. The Deputy Minister stated that the main objective of the FTA is to build trust among the States parties, as well as to support developing countries in preparing and finalizing FTAs, and to continue the transparency agenda beyond COP29 by promoting universal participation in the Expanded Transparency Framework (ETF), highlighting this. She said that the BTP will be a space for cooperation and coordination on climate transparency among actors from all sectors of society, including the government, international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector.

At the event, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan Yerlan Nissanbayev, Advisor to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Special Representative for International Environmental Cooperation Zulfiyya Suleymanova, as well as representatives of the UNFCCC and other international organizations expressed their support for Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency and highly appreciated our country’s efforts in the field of climate transparency. The speakers emphasized the importance of the BTP, which is an important initiative of the COP29 Presidency in the field of climate transparency, and stated that this initiative will contribute to global action to share experiences and successes related to the preparation of countries’ BTPs and their participation in the ETF.

It should be recalled that during the High-Level Dialogue on Global Climate Transparency held in Baku on September 3, Azerbaijan appointed the BTP as the President of COP29. In order to promote the provision of global support to the BTP, the presentation of the BTP was held at the events dedicated to the preparation of the BTPs for the countries of the African region, which took place in Togo and Kenya on September 9-11, organized by the COP29 presidency. The next high-level event on the global promotion of the BTP is planned to be held in New York on September 25 within the framework of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
