The mayor of Valladolid, Jesús Julio Carnero, keeps the pulse of the Ministry of Transport and continues to defend the option of burying the train for the city. “This will be undertaken sooner or later,” he assured, convinced that the capital of Pisuerga has “the same right” as other cities like Cádiz, Murcia or Bilbao to run the railway underground. This is how the councilor responded this Friday in front of the media to the ultimatum launched by the minister of the sector and former mayor of the city, Óscar Puente, for the Town Hall to present the documentation and projects within a month which it has, according to him, while waiting to make it known. Otherwise, warned the head of Transport in his mandate to the Consistory, the agreement for the integration of the railway in the city – signed in 2017 – and the dissolution of the Valladolid High Speed Company would be terminated. The former councilor also accused the current municipal team of “not respecting” the said agreement.

An assertion that the current mayor has categorically denied. “There are no non-conformities and there are administrative vicissitudes,” he stressed, since since taking office, in 2023, there have been changes or modifications in some of the projects already in progress. They will therefore transfer it to the department led by Puente in an “adequate response, documenting that there is no non-compliance.”

What Carnero wanted to emphasize is that his team has been leading the city council for fifteen months, while the agreement for the integration of the surface train, which provided for 22 tunnels in the city, was signed in 2017. “Only two were built,” assured, this is why he concluded that the respect by the previous government team and by the ministry was “bad”.

In any case, he considered that this is the “optimal moment” to sit down and “dialogue”, since “the citizens’ mandate” available to the Town Hall is that of burial and “not that of self- saying surface area”. integration”. “Political and economic circumstances have changed,” Carnero defended.who also opted for the project, which went from the option of burial to that of integration in 2017, to now turn around again, an option that is not considered by the ministry. “We request a new informative study on burial with the use of the diaphragm wall technique,” Carnero said. “This is not an obstinacy on the part of the Town Hall,” he explained, before appealing to “common sense” and respect for “the municipal autonomy of Valladolid”.
