The Canary Islands will respect the judgment of the Constitutional Court which confirms the preventive suspension of autonomous protocol for migrant minors unaccompanied, a decision which does not take the government of Fernando Clavijo “by surprise”, which will continue to “insist” that the State complies with it.

This was expressed during her appearance before the Plenary Assembly of Parliament by the Minister of Social Protection of the Government of the Canary Islands, Candelaria Delgado, who assured that “the court’s decision did not surprise us, because it is based on a wide range of – a wide-ranging legal discussion which will make its way over time.

Delgado stressed that the protocol “is a copy and paste of the framework protocol” which is mandatory compliance and in any case, he declared that his Executive will continue to “insist” that the State respects the Constitution and guarantees interterritorial solidarity.

However, he clarified that “now foreign minors are better received than before” and during the meeting he had last week with the top prosecutor of the Canary Islands, María Farnés Martínez, and the minor prosecutor, he stressed that the attention “was very optimal” with some “small dysfunctions” and despite the “pressure” that the archipelago supports, with some 5,300 minors under supervision.

“Obviously, we are the first faced with a situation of possible abuse“, we took it to the Prosecutor’s Office, and in fact, the four files that the Prosecutor’s Office handled are files presented by the General Directorate of Children and Families”, he noted.

Delgado also insisted that “no child, young person or girl has stopped being taken care of” by the protection services, as it is one of the “main concerns“of the government, which” prioritized agendas “to face a”unprecedented humanitarian crisis“.
