The famous city of bridges that you absolutely must visit

It is the city of bridges that you must visit whenever you can or at least once in your life, it is in Spain and I remember a lot of things in Venice. You’ll just have to go up Catalonia being able to see this sea which almost reaches the houses, this nature which soothes the mind and the body.

Continuing with the explanation on the website of this municipality: “Ampuriabrava is a population entity located in the municipality of Castellón de Ampurias, in the region of Alto Ampurdán, province of Girona (Spain). It is located in the Gulf of Roses, surrounded by the Natural Park of the Ampurdán Marshes, and is the most important residential marina in Europe, with approximately 24 km of navigable canals. It had a registered population of 7,805 inhabitants in 2012. The core is located in the Gulf of Rosas, surrounded by the Ampurdán Marshes Natural Park, between the municipalities of Rosas and San Pedro Pescador. It has a 1.5 km long beach that extends from the border with Rosas to the mouth of the Muga River, south of the urbanization.

We can visit this unique city and enjoy a series of elements that will make the difference in every way: “Before the construction of the core of Ampuriabrava, the land was part of the swamps Empordà, geographical figure without any type of legal protection. In these lands, very suitable for growing rice, there were 5 large farms: Llebrer, Modaguer, Moixó, Vell and Torre Ribota, all in the hands of large landowners and in grazing areas. The coastal part, called Tribanes, was divided into small properties resulting from confiscation at the end of the 19th century.

The first attempts at urban development were born in 1964 by the Marquis of Sant Morí with the businessmen Miquel Arpa i Batlle and his brother-in-law Fernando Vilallonga i Rossell. The project, presented to the municipal council in 1965, was widely criticized by farm owners. However, in 1967 the first canals and houses began to be built, following the model of the high-end residential marina. This was primarily inspired by other similar projects that appeared in Florida and which, in turn, sought to imitate the romantic ideal of classical Venice. In Europe, for example, the marina of Port Grimaud, on the Zaul coast, had already been designed on a similar model.

Sales of Ampuriabrava properties were a success, particularly in Germany. So, in 1975, the second phase began, which included a 600-hectare expansion that was ultimately not completed due to growing conservation awareness combined with the global economic crisis. The environmental mobilization campaign included demonstrations and calls for solidarity to preserve the territory, and following these movements the definitive protection of the marshes by the Generalitat of Catalonia, creating the Natural Park of the Ampurdán Marshes in 1983. Finally , the private managers of the marina have become public, through municipal means, since the 1980s. This change has consolidated the residential model of Ampuriabrava, increasing and improving the infrastructure and leading to carry out the necessary initiatives to a more stable and less seasonal population.
