The Palencia Civil Guard identified the dog that, on August 25, attacked a neighbor in Neighborhoods of La Vega (Palencia)causing his death as well as that of his owner, who is already the subject of an investigation for manslaughter. To do this, he had to check more than 400 animals and 46 breeders until he found the dog that caused the man’s death after throwing itself on his neck.
The events occurred in summer, when the victim was walking on a path near the town and was surprised by a large dog, which caused him serious injuries. Another person walking nearby saw the victim and approached to help him. He reported what had happened by telephone and a Civil Guard patrol with medical services arrived at the scene, which took care of the victim at the Saldaña health center. Given the severity of the bites, the victim died before being evacuated by helicopter to a hospital.
From that same day, the Civil Guard launched a complex investigation aimed at identifying the animal behind the attack, clarifying these facts and thus preventing further attacks. For this, a device was created aimed at locating dogs with characteristics compatible with the injuries suffered by the victim, to subsequently identify them and be able to obtain samples of saliva and possible remains of blood, managing to control more than 400 dogs, including the dog that caused the attack and 46 breeders. The samples were analyzed by the Environmental Department of the Criminalistics Laboratory of the Civil Guard, obtaining a match, which allowed the identification without margin of error of the animal responsible for the attack.
Along with the location and identification of the animal, its owner was also identified, who was investigated for reckless homicide. The procedures carried out were made available to the Court of Instruction No. 1 of Carrión de los Condes..
