The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia, in collaboration with the veterinarians of the Town Hall of Lorca, developed the “Lupus” operation, an investigation launched to pursue the illegal possession of protected species in captivity, which resulted in the investigation into a resident of the municipality of Lorca, who owned four specimens of Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) as pets in an enclosure next to your house.
Specialists from the Benemérita Nature Protection Service investigated the resident of Lorca and investigated him as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against flora and fauna, for illegal possession of specimens of protected wild animals, including detention in captivity is prohibited.
The actions began at the end of last October, when the Seprona Civil Guards obtained a series of indications, thanks to citizen collaboration, about the possible possession of wolves on the land of a resident of Lorca.
The first stages of the operation made it possible to obtain the location of protected species. The civil guards checked on site that in a fence attached to the house, there were four canids that looked like wolves, which were feeding on meat.
The Seprona specialists then coordinated with the Veterinary Service of the Lorca Town Hall to determine that the canines found, by their characteristics, were compatible with the Iberian wolf.
The operation recently resulted in the identification and investigation of the inspected person, who was investigated as the alleged perpetrator of an offense against flora and fauna, for illegal possession in captivity of wild specimens of protected fauna. .
The Iberian wolf is a protected specimen and included in the annex of Royal Decree 139/2011, of February 4, for the elaboration of the List of Wild Species under Special Protection Regime and the Spanish Catalog of Threatened Species.
