The first two months of his mandate are not yet over, but Salvador Illa is already starting to take his exams. The Commons, a priori the closest partners of the socialists, want to start measuring their relations with the government with a proposed tax resolution during the general policy debate which begins this Tuesday in Parliament.
The proposal that Jéssica Albiach will defend follows the line of what was agreed for the inauguration of Illa, but it would mean staging in Parliament the commitment of the new president not to facilitate the installation of the Hard Rock macrocasino in Tarragona .
The proposal presented by the Commons on taxation consists of three points. In the first, they demand the maintenance of current tax levels on inheritances and property, as well as the promotion of environmental taxation and its integration with that of the European Union and, in summary, “to achieve a fairer and more progressive tax system.
Secondly, the Commons propose to increase the tourist tax by 50% in the next budgets for the year 2025, while allowing revenues of this amount to be allocated to housing policies. Currently, the tax on stays in tourist establishments (IEET) of the Generalitat varies between one euro per person per night and 3.50 euros for the most luxurious establishments.
Finally, the Albiach group is calling for the recovery of gambling taxation from before 2014, when it was lowered to 10% to facilitate the arrival of a casino which would be the heart of the tourist complex that the Hard has become. The proposal requires that all games of chance be taxed with a 50% profit tax, which, according to the party, would make the arrival of the macrocasino in the complex of Salou and Vila-seca unfeasible or, at least, much more difficult.
All these requests are included, in more or less detail, in the agreement signed on August 3 between the PSC and the Commons for the investiture. It is therefore now a matter of starting to open up legislative avenues for them, for which they will have to find a majority during the plenary session next Thursday. The position of the Commons in the new legislature will depend on whether or not the PSC supports these measures, in which the socialists need them to carry out the legislative work.
