The Community of Madrid launches the first virtual hospitalization unit for nursing home patients

The Community of Madrid inaugurated the first virtual hospitalization unit to help patients in retirement homes. From now on, the digital platform which brings together the medical records (SELENE) of this resource will include, in addition to those admitted to the establishment, the data of those who are in these socio-health centers. The initiative was developed jointly by the Geriatrics Department and the Innovation Domain.

The Minister of Health, Fátima Matute, today attended the presentation of this pioneering resource for regional public health, during the celebration of Seniors Day. According to Matute, “thanks to this action, which involves adapting the care model to the needs of the elderly, these patients will receive comprehensive care, with a much better quality of care than if they were in the hospital itself, because, among other things, it will facilitate the carrying out of tests in the residences themselves.

Beneficiaries “will be able to be assessed daily by their staff and by geriatric professionals, who will visit these spaces as if it were another floor of the hospital. It will also allow, if necessary, the evaluation and intervention of those from other specialties, under the coordination of Geriatrics” added Matute, who also explained that, thanks to this measure, ” possible complications associated with transfers or admissions are also reduced, such as nosocomial infections, delirium, falls, ulcers, catheters or functional deterioration , among others.

This model makes it possible to effectively respond to the health needs of residents with more personalized and continuous management. This gives rise to better clinical results and greater satisfaction both for users of this public service and for their families. “This is, ultimately, an innovative solution to current aged care challenges,” Matute said.
