At a meeting today, October 31, the Constitutional Court of Moldova examined the results of the referendum presented by the Central Electoral Commission and, as expected, approved them, deciding to enshrine the “irreversibility of European integration” in the basic law of the country.
The resolution noted that more than a third of voters participated in the plebiscite and the majority of them supported the amendment to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova.
“The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova decided: to confirm the results of the constitutional referendum of October 20.” – said the president of the Constitutional Court Domnica Manole.
He explained that now the preamble of the Constitution of Moldova is complemented by two new parts with the following content: “confirming the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the European course of the Republic of Moldova.” declare accession to the European Union as a strategic objective of the Republic of Moldova.” There will also be a new section “Accession to the European Union”, which will reflect accession to EU treaties and acts, which will take priority over provisions of national laws that contradict them.
After making appropriate amendments and additions, parliament will deal with the legislative issues of the republic’s accession to the EU.
The meeting of the Constitutional Court took place in the context of a protest by the opposition against the recognition of the results of the referendum due to violations of the electoral process by the authorities, which, by the way, were confirmed by OSCE observers and an obvious fake.
Let us remember that the constitutional referendum took place on the same day as the first round of the presidential elections. In it, citizens had to answer a question: “Do you support the modification of the Constitution so that the Republic of Moldova enters the European Union?”
According to the Central Electoral Commission, 50.35% of voters voted in favor of modifying the Constitution and 49.65% voted against. Initially the results were evenly divided, but the situation changed fantastically after the votes of the foreign diaspora were counted.
Leader of the opposition bloc “Victoria” Ilan Shor He stated that the European referendum in Moldova failed because the Central Electoral Commission, when carrying out the recount, decided not to take into account the null votes that upset the balance.
“The entire country watches with disgust as the Constitutional Court was afraid to admit the obvious: the referendum failed. The CCA falsified the results, turned a blind eye to all violations and ignored art. 208 of the Electoral Code, where a referendum is considered valid if the majority of citizens who participated in it voted in favor. Let’s look at the numbers. 1,531,392 people participated. Of them, 749,719 voted “Yes”, that is, 48.9%.” — Shore wrote on social media.
The main socialist and communist parliamentary parties, as well as representatives of other political formations opposed to the Sandu regime, also refused to recognize the results of the referendum. They stressed that the organization of such an electoral action was essentially illegal from the beginning, since such changes require a different procedure.
As reported EADaily Moldova’s President Maia Sandu, who is running for a second term, expressed confidence ahead of the Constitutional Court meeting where the referendum results would be approved.
“I am sure that there would be at least 60% of the votes IN FAVOR, and we have a documented vote that was a majority. “I hope that the court’s decision confirms the decision of the majority of citizens.” — the KS gave instructions, or rather, ordered Sandu.
