The department of Tourism of the Council of Mallorca reported a total of 17 sanctions value 80,000 euros each in two buildings in Palma dedicated to illegal tourist rentals. In total, the amount of the proposed sanctions amounts to 1.36 million eurossince they dedicated themselves to this activity without having any license for it.
Concretely, the sanctions sector of the Ministry of Tourism initiated these files of sanctions for tourist infractions at 17 floors which were sold in Palma, in two different buildings. Specifically, 10 of these shares correspond to one property and the rest, the other 7, to the other..
The Minister of Tourism, Jose Marcial Rodriguezexpressed his satisfaction with the actions carried out by the inspection and sanctions service of the department. “The illegal offer, regardless of the sector in which it operates, This not only represents very damaging unfair competition for all those who do things well on our island, who are the vast majority, but a terrible problem for coexistencesomething we want to fight against and eradicate,” he said.
Rodriguez explained that these sanctions are the result of a long work within the department, which has “scrupulously complied with all administrative procedures”, and which has allowed, “within the legal deadlines”, to act in this way.
THE sanctions which are currently being offered to those who carry out illegal tourist rentals on the island are 80,000 euros for each asset detectedThe range of fines set by law varies from 40,001 euros at its lowest, up to 400,000 euros at most, and until now they imposed a value of 40,001 euros.
In this way, the proposed sanctions that will now be imposed on anyone who illegally carries out this activity will amount to 80,000 euros per household, with the aim of dissuading these people from ceasing their activity, protecting residents and guaranteeing the legal security of all legal offers in the tourism sector.
The Council has doubled the number of inspections
It should be remembered that the Consell of Majorca doubled the number of checks against illegal tourist offers compared to a year ago: 953 against 408 materialized by the previous island government of the socialist Catalina Cladera. Furthermore, the number of files opened in homes where illegal rentals were carried out increased by 20% from January to May 2024 and compared to the same months of 2023.
In addition, until mid-November, the island institution will promote a inspection plan with more than 2,500 actions throughout Mallorca to detect and pursue illegal tourist offers, as well as possible irregularities that may occur in the regulated offer.
Of all the inspections planned by the 20 inspectors from the ConsellAround 80% will be dedicated to combating illegal tourist rentals in Mallorca.
