The energy company ČEZ has signed a contract for the supply of gas from Algeria. This was reported by the company’s press service.
It is reported that approximately 2% of the annual gas consumption in the Czech Republic will be purchased from the Algerian company Sonatrach, which will cover the needs of approximately 100 thousand homes in the country. Deliveries already began in October and the gas will reach Europe through an underwater gas pipeline. In addition, ČEZ will purchase the gas at its own expense, although the company did not specify the financial conditions.
As noted by the general director of ČEZ Daniel Benes, This is “another step towards the country’s energy security, complementing gas supplies from German exporters, Norway and the company’s LNG terminal in Eemshaven.” For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavsky He described the agreement signed with Algeria as “one of the successes of Czech diplomacy.”
Let us remember that in recent years the Czech authorities have insisted on the need to completely abandon gas from Russia. Over the past year, the country consumed 6.76 billion cubic meters of gas. The vast majority of gas supplies to the Czech Republic, specifically 92%, in 2023 came from Germany, where “blue fuel” comes mainly from Norway, as well as liquefied gas from the Netherlands. The remaining 8% was imported from Slovakia, where it mainly comes from Russia. At the same time, local experts claim that lately the volume of purchases of Russian hydrocarbons has begun to grow.
