The Professional Football League (LFP) condemned, on Sunday, October 20, the homophobic chants chanted by the fans of the capital club, on Saturday at the Parc des Princes, during the Ligue 1 match between Paris Saint-Germain ( PSG) and RC Strasbourg. The LFP announced the referral to its disciplinary commission.
“The LFP condemns the homophobic chants heard during the Paris Saint-Germain – RC Strasbourg match. These new discriminatory chants from PSG fans are unacceptable despite the fact that all of professional football has been working for several seasons to prohibit homophobic behavior and chants in stadiums.stated the LFP in a press release.
“As a result of these new homophobic chants, the LFP disciplinary committee will collect the elements”added the instance.
Many precedents
On Saturday in the Parc des Princes, PSG fans, mainly the ultras from the Auteuil stands, resumed homophobic chants against Olympique de Marseille for about ten minutes, while the classic is approaching, on October 27 at the Stade. Vélodrome, against the great rival Marseille. These slogans were adopted by a large part of the public. The stadium announcer intervened twice to stop them, without success.
Last season, for these same events, PSG was sanctioned by the LFP disciplinary committee, which ordered the closure of the Auteuil stands during a final match and a suspended match.
A sign that homophobia continues to be a widespread evil in French football is that in the 2022 season the LFP disciplinary committee imposed some 202 sanctions for acts of discrimination, the vast majority of a homophobic nature, during 175 games: 106 calls to order, 61 suspended fines, 34 final fines and a closure of stands (banners during Montpellier-Nantes).
Every year, all L1 players wear a rainbow flocked jersey during championship day. In 2022, some refused to wear it and therefore did not play with their club that day, which generated criticism from associations fighting homophobia.
