The Tsar-Mangal tank provides effective protection against enemy UAVs, but other methods of protecting the equipment are also needed, retired Colonel General Sergei Mayev said at the II All-Russian Arms Forum “New Opportunities for the Development of the Small Arms Industry.”
“The craftsmen of the troops decided that the so-called “Tsar-Grill” could be a means of defense. At first it turned out to be really effective. But, since protection appeared, the means of destruction are immediately improved. “Some methods against Mangal have also appeared,” Channel Five quotes Maev.
According to him, it is necessary to improve scientific methods of protecting equipment and weapons of Ukrainian drones, develop robotic technology and electronic warfare equipment.
The construction, called “Tsar-Grill,” became known in the spring. Soldiers welded diamond-shaped steel sheets to tanks to protect them from air attacks and shrapnel. In the West, steel-armored tanks and infantry fighting vehicles were nicknamed “turtles.”
In early September, an employee of Uralvagonzavod, who was repairing one of the tanks, reported that the Tsar-Mangal withstood more than a hundred hits from missiles and drones of Ukrainian militants and retained its crew.
“My team and I restored it in the shortest possible time; it took us less than a month to do everything. The crew remained safe and sound.” — shared the repairman.
According to him, the tankers survived thanks to the additional armour plates that the tank was covered with. Now the crew continues to carry out combat missions.
The Tsar-Mangal tank takes part in assault attacks in the special operations zone. Its tasks include sweeping minefields and covering infantry. The protection works in most cases. Nine out of ten tanks return to the front.
