The era of cyborgs is approaching: a new hope for paralyzed people

Elon Musk’s Neuralink company has received approval for new research that will explore the possibilities of a brain implant and an experimental robotic hand.

Oku.Az reports about this with reference to “Reuters”.

The aim of the trial is said to be to evaluate the safety of the wireless neurointerface and surgical robot, as well as its effect on quadriplegic patients with paralysis of all limbs.

Participants will be able to control external devices only with the power of thought.

Last week “Neuralink” from Canada “Health Canada” received permission from the regulator to test its device in Canada. Six patients with paralysis are planned to participate in the study, which will be an important step in expanding the geography of the program.

“We are pleased to announce the approval and initiation of a new study investigating the feasibility of increasing control to control an experimental robotic hand with the N1 implant. This is an important first step towards restoring not only digital freedom, but also physics,” Neuralink said. “UNKNOWN” indicated on the account.

The company noted that this study is being conducted under the code name “Convoy” and that additional information will be provided later.

It should be noted that “Neuralink” received approval from the independent monitoring board for the first human clinical trial of brain chip implantation in September 2023. After that, the company began recruiting volunteers among patients with paralysis due to a cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

In January 2024, the company’s specialists placed the implant in the human brain for the first time. In August, Neuralink successfully implanted a brain chip in a second patient. He currently has 400 electrodes working in his brain.
