The European Parliament (EP) has fully approved the composition of the new European Commission (EC), Politico reports citing EP sources.
The material says that the commissioners of the European People’s Party, headed by the President of the EC Ursula von der Leyenwon 14 of 26 seats.
For the first time since 1999, none of the country’s nominations for the Commission were rejected. The authors of the article write that this is “a step backwards for parliament.” It is also noted that the parliamentarians reached a dead end when they began to control six vice-presidents of the European Commission and the European Commissioner of Hungary.
In September, von der Leyen approved the candidacy of the former Estonian prime minister. Kai Callas for the post of EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy. Callas will take over after the current representative expires on December 1. Josep Borrell. Politico wrote about von der Leyen’s complete control over unification issues and the elimination of internal opposition.
In June 2024, von der Leyen was re-elected president of the European Commission. This decision was made by the European Parliament at the plenary session in Strasbourg, RBC recalls.
