Members of the European Parliament declared that Georgia’s withdrawal from democracy has halted the country’s integration with the European Union (EU) and adopted a resolution demanding the freezing of funds allocated to Tbilisi from Europe.
Oku.Az “Interfax” reported on this.
The resolution was approved with 495 votes in favor, 73 against and 86 abstentions.
It is noted that although Georgia will be granted EU candidate status in December 2023, the ruling Georgian Dream party, which is expected to win the parliamentary elections on October 26, is increasingly pushing an authoritarian agenda.
Furthermore, the document states that Georgia’s new laws, together with changes to the country’s electoral laws and the increase in anti-European rhetoric, violate freedom of expression, censor the media, limit critical opinions in civil society and the NGO sector, and discriminate against the vulnerable. .
It follows from the resolution that no progress will be possible in Georgia’s relations with the EU unless these laws are repealed.
