Brussels – when most European regions suffered from unprecedented extreme waves, the European Union Commission (EU) proposed a new climatic target for member countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent until 2040.
This percentage is a comparison with the level of emissions in 1990 and is considered the right step towards the goal of zero emissions in 2050.
This goal of reducing emissions was first proposed in 2024 and appeared after the hard process of negotiations between member countries. The current goal requires the European Union to reduce emissions of at least 55 percent in 2030. The European Commission in May 2025 stated that Blok reduced 37 percent emissions emissions.

Carbon loan is just a dream
According to this proposal, the countries of the European Union can buy international carbon loans for green projects in third countries, starting from 2036 and so on, and use them to compensate to 3 percent of the 1990 emissions.
