In the midst of the migration crisis, cases of solidarity continue to occur. One of them is Emilia’sneighbor of the Toledan city of La Puebla de Almoradiel, responsible for the fact that many migrants have a roof over their heads where to live in the city.
“We live in a family. In the city, we feel very good,” says Babacar, one of the migrants welcomed. He arrived from Senegal to the Canary Islands a year ago. At that time, he met Emilia, the person responsible for giving him and his teammates a chance at this moment.
“Babacar called me one day in February when it was raining and told me he was on the street, sleeping on the street and I took him in for a month.”said Emilia.
Another of the migrants welcomed is Abdul. She has been living in Spain for two years and helps in any way she can while she waits for her papers: “I like cooking. When I was in my country, my mother taught me how to prepare food.”
Now they They live in a house donated by other townspeople and they are learning Spanish while waiting for their papers. “Here are these children in this house who really want to work, but without electricity because they don’t have papers,” says Emilia.
For four years 37 migrants passed through this solidarity house. 20 of them already have their papers and are working. But of the last three, Omar is the only one who has had any luck. After a complicated journey from Gambia and after eight months of waiting, he starts working on the ground on Monday.
“82 people on the boat, it’s very difficult. Eating very little. I’ve been in Spain for eight months. First the Canary Islands, then Mérida, then Ciudad Real and now the city,” Omar says of his journey to La Puebla de Almoradiel, a place where the migrant is welcome.
