The fight against corruption calls for the indictment of Ábalos in the Koldo affair

The anti-corruption prosecution sent a report to the judge in charge of the Koldo case in which it requests the indictment of former Minister of Transport José Luis Ábalos. In the document, the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office maintains that Judge Ismael Moreno presents a reasoned declaration before the Supreme Court requesting the indictment of Ábalos, since the current deputy is registered before the High Court. The crimes that the public prosecutor indirectly attributes to the MP are corruption, influence peddling and membership in a criminal organization, according to prosecutorial sources.

The letter from the anti-corruption prosecutor focuses on the evidence provided by the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard in the report known last week and which places Ábalos in “a relevant and responsible role” in the “plot of Koldo.” case of alleged corruption in the procurement of medical supplies during the pandemic with government contracts tucked into the Department of Transportation he led between January 2020 and July 2021.

The Civil Guard attributes to Ábalos a decisive role in awarding the land a 20 million euro contract for medical supplies and, at the same time, indirectly considers him as a recipient of gifts, such as the enjoyment of a chalet that a businessman would have acquired. of the network and the payment of the rent of an apartment in the center of Madrid to the partner of the former minister.

Ábalos informed the National Court that he waived the prerogative of testifying before the Supreme Court and agreed to do so before the judge investigating the case. For his part, Judge Moreno had already started the procedures to refer the case to the Supreme Court, asking Congress to certify Ábalos’ status as deputy and, therefore, that he be qualified before the High Court. The Lower House complied with the demand on Tuesday.
