The former head of Japan’s health ministry has expressed his desire to become the country’s prime minister.

Former Japanese Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare, former Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato announced his intention to run for the post of chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), who will become the country’s future head of government. He stated this at a special press conference, TASS reports.

“The top priority is to double people’s income. This is more important than anything else.” – said Kato.

He added that his plan to double household incomes could take 10 to 15 years.

Previously, the former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the current Secretary General of the Government presented their candidacies for this position. Yoshimasa HayashiSecretary General of the PLD Toshimitsu MotegiMinister of Economic Security of Japan Sanae Takaichiformer Minister of Defense Shigeru Ishiba and former Minister of Environment Shinjiro Koizumi. In addition to them, three other current members of the government intend to run: the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yoko KamikawaMinister of Digitalization Kono Tarot and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Ken Saito.

Elections for the new PLD president will be held on September 27. The electoral campaign will begin on September 12.
