The Generalitat Valenciana asks the government to cancel the Franco trials against Miguel Hernández

The Generalitat Valenciana has approved an institutional declaration in which it joins the request of the family of Miguel Hernández for the central government to cancel the judicial summaries opened by the Franco dictatorship against them. The “most universal son of Orihuela” was sentenced to death, a sentence commuted to 30 years in prison. He died of tuberculosis in Alicante prison on March 28, 1942.

In this text, which will be sent to the Presidency of the Government, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Culture and the parliamentary groups of the Congress and the Senate, the Executive of Carlos Mazón requests that a Declaration of recognition and reparation personal be made in favor of the poet and his family in a institutional act “in the most appropriate environment” on October 30, coinciding with the day of his birth.

“With this declaration, the Valencian Community pays tribute to Miguel Hernández, the poet who, from his native country, raised his voice for freedom, justice and human rights, and whose legacy commits us to continue to fight for a fairer and more dignified society,” says the document approved by the Consell this Tuesday.

“The historical reparation of the poet is also a reparation of our own identity and dignity,” affirms the Valencian executive power, recalling that the request for annulment of the summaries was rejected in 2010 and 2013 by the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court.

An agreement that is concluded “in application of the law of Concordia” and this comes amid controversies after the refusal of the PP and Vox to support an institutional declaration, presented by the PSPV, with the same purpose, at the City Hall of Orihuela, home of one of the most emblematic figures of the Spanish poetry. The initiative had more luck in Elche, where the left managed to advance the motion during the municipal plenary session, with the PP abstaining and Vox voting against.

“We considered that it was time to take a step forward” and recognize “a political victim”Consell spokesperson Ruth Merino explained at a press conference. For his part, questioned by the media during the inauguration of the Habitat Fair, the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, affirmed that he would integrate this “fundamental” question to the requests that he will transmit to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, during the meeting to be held on Friday in La Moncloa.
