The government announces a debate in Parliament on the free trade agreement with Mercosur

France “is not isolated” in its opposition to the EU-Mercosur agreement, says Emmanuel Macron

Emmanuel Macron stated on Monday at the G20 in Rio de Janeiro that France was not “not isolated” in his opposition “as is” to the trade agreement between the European Union and the Latin American countries of Mercosur, considering that several countries “join”.

“This text (…)because it has been going on for several decades, it is based on prerequisites that are obsolete”the French president said before journalists. He raised the idea of “Rethink the relationship with this subregion, whether Mercosur or perhaps Brazil,” adding: “because I understand that Argentina may not want to do it in a regional framework”.

Emmanuel Macron explained that he “propose” to the Brazilian president, Lula, to begin “New work to try to develop a joint but protective investment framework” French and European agriculture. “In this sense, we really want not to import agricultural products that do not respect the rules that we have imposed” in environmental and health matters, he argued.

“Contrary to what many think, France is not isolated and many are joining us”welcomed the French president. “We have been working for several months, several years. So we get together, we get together”he said, assuring “work with everyone who has the same concerns”, “Poles, Austrians, Italians and many others in Europe”.
