The government fines five low-cost airlines to the tune of nearly 179 million euros for abusive practices

The Minister of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda, Pablo Bustinduy, signed sanctions against five low-cost airlines almost 179 million euros for implementing abusive practices such as charging for hand luggage or reserving adjacent seats to accompany dependent people. This is what his department reported this Friday, specifying that the total amount of sanctions amounts to 178,933,631.99 euros.

The sanctioned companies are Ryanair, Vueling, Easyjet, Norwegian and Volotea. The fine against Ryanair is the highest of all: as the ministry indicated, in the case of the Irish company it amounts to 107,775,777 euros. Vueling’s fine amounts to 39,264,412 euros; 29,094,441 in the case of Easyjet; 1,610,001 for Norwegian and 1,189,000.99 for Volotea.

Bustinduy confirmed the sanctions proposed by the General Secretariat for Consumption and Gaming, thereby rejecting resources appeals filed by airlines. This ends a survey that Consumption started last year for practices described as “very serious” breaches of the regulations.
