The Minister of Equality of Castile-La Mancha, Sarah Simonadmitted this Monday that he was in “shock” for everything you learn these days about Íñigo Errejón, Former spokesperson for Sumar in the Congress of Deputies.
Errejón announced by surprise last Thursday that resigned from all his positions and that he was leaving politics, a decision that came after anonymous accusations against him were made public during alleged psychological abuse and gender-based violence over the last few years.
More precisely, he abandoned active politics after the publication of a anonymous comment collected by journalist Cristina Fallarás on social networks which denounced “vexatious” sexual behavior, followed by accusation of actress Elisa Mouliaá claiming he had “harassed” her.
“I am horrified by everything we are learning”
In statements to EL ESPAÑOL – EL DIGITAL CLM, the Minister of Equality of Castile-La Mancha said that “I am horrified by everything we are learning about Íñigo Erregón”, especially “being a man who has spoken so much about feminism and new masculinities”. “The shock is significant,” he admitted.
Simón indicated that he has been “metabolizing” all of this for several days and “trying to organize ideas to draw conclusions and even lessons,” and emphasized that “the fundamental idea that everyone We must learn that violence against women, in all its forms, is present everywhere.“.
“Sexist behavior is not attributable to a specific position in society, age group or ideology. Violence against women is absolutely transversal and this is why we talk about structural violence. Society has been organized since its existence on models of inequality towards women, on the superiority of men. We have developed and progressed with this and for this reason, that inequality is there, at our roots. There are episodes of violence that are so normalized that for many people they are invisible,” he said.
Support for victims
In this sense, Simón emphasized that “now there are many things to do.” The first, “condemn such an attitude and launch all our support and love to the women who have suffered these behaviors so contemptible”; the second, “be clear about what it is: violence against women, without family names or political slogans”; and the third, “assume that sexual violence has always existed and always remained hidden.”
“I really emphasize the idea that it’s not that more sexist crimes are being reported now, but that we know more because the fear began to disappear. It is good news that we are talking about this normally and that sex offenders, at all levels, are clear that the fear must be within them, because we will be relentless against them,” he added.
The advisor stressed that women who experience sexual violence “They need to feel that society as a whole protects them, cares for them and defends them” so that the fear disappears. “This is why it is extremely dangerous to deny sexist violence, as VOX does and as the PP excuses,” he expressed.
“It’s absurd to talk about right or left”
Likewise, he indicated that “we are faced with the risk that machismo will use this affair to win a match again.” “The story that is already circulating in the streets, according to which progressives and people on the left are being told ‘and now here comes Errejón’, is extremely dangerous. It is absurd to start talking about right or left to raise this issue. and it is equally terrifying that the same attacks are written on a scoreboard as if they were about scoring goals, as if a goal had been scored for us feminists,” she criticized .
“I welcome to the world anyone who has just discovered that machismo is also on the left. According to the logic of probabilities, this is not and will not be the first case of violence against women in a progressive and left-wing profile. This is why some of the speeches that we are starting to hear from those of us who do not forget that the only thing they intend to do is to deny violence and reinforce sexist positions are absurd,” he said. Simon concluded.
In the same spirit, Emiliano García-Page asked “what it means to distinguish between person and character”, an argument used by Errejón in his resignation letter. “Since when can you do one thing in public and the opposite in private?”insisted the president of Castile-La Mancha, interviewed by the media after the inauguration of a children’s school in San Carlos del Valle (Ciudad Real).
“We have breakfast every day with characters you thought were great who end up being hell” mused Page, saying that there are those who “lie with enormous shamelessness” and others who “don’t tell the truth all week 60 times.”
However, according to the Castilian-Manchego president, Politicians should strive to make it “normal for a politician to try to keep his promises.”. “I’m not saying I’ll succeed, but what moves society is consistency. You can’t lie with impunity and nothing happens,” he concluded.
