The hypocrisy of the West in Armenia: why are embassies silent about what is happening?

After winning a glorious victory after the Second Karabakh War, Azerbaijan increased its influence in the region and the post-Soviet space and signed a number of international projects. Various Western circles, unable to digest Azerbaijan’s victory and success, and its growing influence, continue to apply double standards to this day, luring various actors to adopt anti-Azerbaijani measures at every opportunity. The measures taken by official Baku in favor of an independent foreign policy and the development of the region provoke jealousy and envy in Western political circles, attacks such as undermining the ongoing peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and stopping the process of removing the region’s transportation infrastructure from the block. To do this, the West uses Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who has already become a puppet, and the ruling party, which it uses as a toy.

The West’s double standards have recently been demonstrated in the issue of SMS dismissals in Armenia, as well as the COP29 event that took place in Azerbaijan and concluded successfully. The bias shown towards Baku, which hosts the UN climate conference and carries out all the organizational work in a professional manner, and the unfair critical articles in the media, which are mouthpieces for Western political circles, demonstrate this once further. In Armenia, Pashinyan’s dismissal of officials via SMS and sending messages to opposition deputies on this issue is, in fact, a clear example of the fall of democracy and dictatorship. At the same time, for some reason, the embassy of any Western country in Yerevan has not made any statement or issued any statement on the issue.

It is interesting that several times a year conferences and forums are held in Armenia under the name of democracy, embassies in Yerevan (we are talking about Western countries) are represented at the management level, speeches and statements about development and progress are made. of democracy in the country. Already in June such a conference was held during the protest organized by priest Bagrat Srbaza. Although Armenian police used stun grenades and crushed protesters, US and EU ambassadors banned opposition parliamentarians from gathering in front of their buildings. In the end, they highly appreciated the development of democracy in Armenia.

Millions donated in the name of reform

Curiously, political chaos reigns in Armenia today. Pashinyan’s government is openly attacking the legislative and judicial branches. The powers of the deputies will necessarily cease. Those who are not satisfied with Pashinyan’s resignation SMS are threatened and compromising information about them is revealed. Why are the ambassadors of the EU, the United States, Germany and France silent?

During the opposition actions in Yerevan, the police approach the area and not the participants, the Western embassies remain silent, the lawyers beat the police, but the embassies do not speak. This is a real double standard. Even when a normal street incident occurs in Azerbaijan, Western embassies, which make biased statements by word of mouth, prefer to remain silent in Armenia.

The heads of local government bodies who coldly welcomed Pashinian during his visit to Sünik are arrested, citizens are tortured every day in police stations, the opposition is persecuted, one person is thrown in handcuffs from the fifth floor of the committee of investigation, Prime Minister caravan runs over pregnant woman, but Western embassies remain silent. A few days after each such incident, US and EU ambassadors meet with state institutions, assess their work, and PACE, in its resolution, highly appreciates Armenia’s commitment to the development of democracy.

Recently, Soros played an important role in the appointment of the Minister of the Interior. As you all know, the Foundation supported the appointment of Arpine Sargsián. Even the EU representative, Vasilis Maragos, who met with Arpine, congratulated him and expressed his willingness to support him. At the same time, the Western diplomat spoke of the great works and reforms carried out thanks to cooperation.

This is another manifestation of the West’s hypocritical policy. In the latest hearings held in the Parliament of Armenia, it was reported that crime has increased to a shameful level in the country and drug trafficking has reached a very high level. The news spread throughout the media and the political circles represented by Vasilis also know it. And then what kind of large-scale cooperation and reform are we talking about? It can be assumed that the police protect Pashinyan’s government with their baton and count on the support of the West to suppress the opposition.

What is interesting is that the EU allocates millions of dollars for the reform of the courts in Armenia. He then praises these reforms in his reports. Pashinyan dismisses head of reformed SMS system. Similarly, the same scheme was implemented in the anti-corruption department. So it turns out that the money transferred by the West was not sent for reforms, but to secure Pashinyan’s seat. But I wonder what these embassies or the respective countries will mention in the reports about how and where the money is spent. Because all the dismissals and criticisms occurred after the reforms.

Pashinyan’s Gymru Pain

For some time now, there has been a governance crisis in the Gyumri region of Armenia. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wants to govern Armenia’s second largest city alone, without the participation of the opposition. Since the ruling party failed to obtain a majority in the 2021 local elections, management of the city was made possible through a coalition. However, Pashinyan fears being defeated in some places as he prepares for the 2026 elections, so he is trying to establish his sovereignty in some places through political manipulations. Because the Prime Minister uses various methods to recover his declining rate day by day and win the elections. But with the recent events in Gyumri, it is considered to be in a political trap.

The point is that 14 members of the Gyumri Council of Elders resigned from their mandate under pressure from Pashinyan, and a crisis arose in the 33-seat Council. 17 votes are needed to elect a new mayor. Today, the ruling party faction in Gyumri has 11 members. At the same time, it is necessary to have at least 17 members to hold a meeting. Therefore, neither an assembly nor a new mayor is elected in Gyumru. In this situation, Pashinyan is trying to appoint a temporary mayor, but he cannot make a decision on this, because there is no unity in the city and in his team. This usually occurs when power figures within the dominant team decline and centrifugal movements occur.

To get out of the situation, the Prime Minister took an unprecedented step: to clarify who will be appointed to the position of head of the local branch of the party, he decided to hold internal elections. With this, Pashinyan wants the chairman of the party branch in Gyumri to be automatically appointed acting mayor so that he can use administrative resources to his advantage in the next municipal elections. The Western embassies accredited in Armenia know this, but they remain silent and do not make noise. Instead, new meetings and conferences will be organized, people will be told stories about the development of democracy and Pashinyan’s successful reforms.

All these listed facts prove that the West has always remained loyal to its hypocritical policy. The course of events shows that Western political circles will do everything possible to tear Pashinyan away from Russia, so that he can win again in the 2026 elections. The Prime Minister will continue to carry out the tasks entrusted to him by his superiors. Because the steps that Pashinyan will take, including his visits, are already being agreed upon in the political backstage of the West.

The Armenian opposition does not hesitate to criticize the Armenian government, which did not participate in COP29, saying that “probably their masters did not allow them to participate in the conference.” This reveals the truth. Because Armenia’s participation in the Baku climate conference could open a new page in bilateral relations and non-partisan negotiations. Apparently, the circles that do not want peace in the South Caucasus did not want it and sent a message to Yerevan to prevent such a meeting. The statement “We support peace in the South Caucasus” at each event is proof of the upcoming hypocrisy of the embassies.
