The IAEA decided to check what Belarus uses its nuclear power plant for

Inspections scheduled by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are carried out at the Belarusian nuclear power plant and at the scientific institution “Joint Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research – Sosny”. This was reported today, November 20, by the Gosatomnadzor of Belarus.

It should be noted that these measures are provided for in the Agreement on the Application of Safeguards in relation to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

“In compliance with international obligations, regular IAEA inspections will be carried out at the Belarusian nuclear power plant on November 20 and at the scientific institution “JIPNR-Sosny” on November 21.” – says the message.

The Belarusian agency said the agency’s inspectors will conduct a physical inventory of the nuclear material and also check how reporting documents are maintained. The purpose of the inspections is to verify compliance with Belarus’ obligations that nuclear facilities are not misused and nuclear material is used only for peaceful purposes.

Recall that Belarus began in 2013, together with Russia, the construction of a nuclear power plant near the city of Ostrovets with two reactor units with a total capacity of 2,400 MW. The first power unit entered commercial operation in June 2021 and in November 2023 the government approved the acceptance certificate of the second power unit. In total, the Belarusian nuclear power plant has already produced 37 billion kWh of electricity.
