The British Fashion Council (BFC) has announced the nominees for the 2024 Fashion Awards, which will take place in December. Among the nominees is John Galliano, who was previously fired from Dior for racist and anti-Semitic comments.
Ahead of September, a crucial month for the global fashion industry, the British Fashion Council (BFC) has announced the nominees for the 2024 Fashion Awards. The prestigious event, scheduled for December, recognises designers whose collections have had a significant impact on the industry, redefining global fashion, according to the BFC. As every year, the winners will be selected by a committee of 1,000 industry leaders who will cast their votes over the coming weeks.
The list of nominees includes several unexpected names. Designer of the Year nominees include Miuccia Prada, Rick Owens, Chimmaya Kamali, Jonathan Anderson of JW Anderson and Loewe, and Pieter Mulier of Alaïa and John Galliano of Maison Margiela.
Galliano, once a prominent figure in the fashion world, was accused of anti-Semitism in 2011. During an incident at a Paris restaurant, he was drunk and shouted racist and anti-Semitic remarks, including references to gas chambers and statements such as “I love Hitler.”
The documentary John Galliano: Highs and Lows was released earlier this year to mixed reviews. The film examines the anti-Semitic scandal that led to his dismissal from Dior and explores how the once-celebrated designer reached such a chaotic turn in his career. “What I did was disgusting. It was just terrible,” a remorseful Galliano said in the documentary.
Although Galliano’s nomination recognises his work at Maison Margiela, he is expected to soon leave the brand to take up a position as creative director at a larger, more established fashion house.
