The investigation on “inequality in the heel test” of elDiario.es wins the Prismas Prize for scientific journalism

The story of Alma and Alex, two babies with the same serious metabolic disease, but with very different consequences, because in their autonomous communities the same diseases are not detected during the heel test, received the Prismas 2024 prize in the category for “best journalistic article”.

The report “Inequalities in the “heel test”: miracle or nightmare depending on the postal code”, published in April 2023 by Antonio Martínez Ron, head of the scientific section of elDiario.es, collected detailed data on the situation and the voices of parents’ associations and doctors, who have been denouncing for years that the survival and quality of life of Spanish newborns it depends on where you were born.

Thanks to these complaints, the government recognized a year later that the situation was unfair and approved the equalization of the number of tests carried out in all autonomous communities. On April 15, 2024, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced that within a year The number of diseases requiring compulsory screening will double in all communities, to increase from 11 to 22, and will standardize this service throughout the territory to avoid its coverage depending on the postal code.

This is the XXXVIIth edition of the Prismas Casa de las Ciencias Awards for broadcasting, organized by the Science Museums of A Coruña promote the dissemination of scientific culture and support scientific communication professionals. On the museum’s website you can see the winners of the other categories, who will receive the prize during a ceremony next Saturday, November 16, at the A Coruña City Hall.
