The judiciary reactivates appointments to the Supreme Court and commits to ensuring gender parity.

The new General Council of the Judicial Power (CGPJ) reactivates appointments to high judicial functions which had been paralyzed since 2021 due to a legal reform which prevented appointments to judicial leadership during their mandate. The plenary session agreed on Wednesday to announce in the Official State Gazette the call for applications for four positions of president of the Chamber of the Supreme Court, where the vacancies amount to 26.

These processes will be governed for the first time in history with a criterion of parity between the sexes, as imposed by the law of equal representation. This rule establishes that any appointment or proposal for appointment must guarantee the principle of balanced presence of women and men, such that people of each sex do not exceed 60% nor are less than 40%.

The approved convocations are those of the presidencies of the civil, contentious-administrative and social chambers, currently occupied respectively by Francisco Marín Castán, Pablo Lucas and Antonio Sempere. Also included is Criminal Law, headed by Manuel Marchena and whose mandate will expire on November 3. He and Jacobo Barja de Quiroga, of the Military Chamber, are the only ones who continue to exercise their functions as titular presidents after the vacancy crisis.
