Relations between Russia and Abkhazia are a priority of Moscow’s foreign policy, said the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the situation in Abkhazia, where the opposition demands the resignation of President Aslan Bzhania.
“Bilateral relations between Russia and Abkhazia are a very important priority of our foreign policy,” — Peskov told reporters when asked how the Kremlin perceives the tense situation in Abkhazia.
The Russian Federation supports the rapid normalization of the situation in Abkhazia and hopes that it will remain within the constitutional framework, Peskov said.
The confrontation between the authorities and the opposition in Abkhazia began over an investment agreement with the Russian Federation, which provides for the construction of apartments in the republic. Opposition supporters believe that its implementation will lead to the destruction of small and medium-sized businesses in Abkhazia. Opposition supporters took over the presidential administration on November 15 and since then the president has been trying to lead the country from his ancestral village of Tamysh in the Ochamchira region.
