The plenary session of the Cuenca City Council initially approved the ordinance that regulates and demarcates the city’s low emissions zone, which will be launched on January 1, 2025. The Mobility Councilor, Adrián Martínez, recalled that he This is a “legal obligation”. for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, as is the case of Cuenca, and that the project must be re-examined three years after its start and, thereafter, every four years.

This low-emission zone will begin at the intersection of Colón Street with Virgen de la Luz Avenue, with the Huécar River itself as a natural border, and will also affect Las Torres, Aguirre, José Cobo, Carretería streets and the surroundings of Santiago Hospital. .

Signage will be provided at access and exit points to the area using a license plate recognition system linked to the environmental label. The Town Hall will create a municipal register of vehicles authorized to enter this area.

The councilor recognized that, by accepting the proposals presented by PP and Vox, there will be a six-month moratorium on the application of sanctions. Regarding the deadlines, during the first year, vehicles with the zero, “eco”, “C” and “B” labels will be able to enter the low emissions zone. Subsequently, access will be gradually reduced until 2034 Bs and from 2039 neither “Cs” will be able to enter.

The order had the favorable votes of the PSOE and Cuenca Nos Une, the abstention of Cuenca en Marcha and the PP and the vote against of Vox. It will now be put on public display to collect the allegations before returning to the plenary session for final approval.
