Gaza mayor of Yahya R. Sarraj sent a letter to his colleague Barcelona, Jama Collboni on Tuesday, thanking him for the “bold and complete” support of the Palestinian reason “during the current genocide.” The letter to which was the access to Eldiario.s, refers to the decision adopted by the municipal plenary session about the violation of relations with Israel until human rights are respected in gas.
“This is an important decision made to the current humanitarian disaster in Gaza, sends a clear and strong message of solidarity with people who are fighting for dignity, justice and peace,” said Sarrad, who congratulated Barcelona on “firm commitment to international law”, which reflects “high values of moral leadership and global responsibility”.
The mayor of Gazati also praised that Barcelona asked for an immediate fire and the rise of the humanitarian bloc, a gesture, which, according to him, “gives hope to the population that suffered from huge difficulties” and that he was “deep without the Palestinian people. Sarraj closes a letter who wants to “deepen the connections of friendship, solidarity and cooperation” between both cities.
Gas and Barcelona have been cities -scrapes since 1998. Initially, Tel -Aviv was also in this link, but this twin was also undertaken in a statement that suspended relations with Israel.
The process of achieving this point began in February 2023. The then mayor of Ada Kolau decided to break a double unilaterally (through the decree of the mayor), which joins the Catalan capital with the city of Tel -Aviv. But the decision lasted only seven months, while Collboni, who recently arrived at the city hall, was restored.
The socialist decided just a month before the events of October 7, which began the Israeli offensive in Gaza, and since then various social movements and some public representatives have influenced the consistory so as not to suspend the twin. Two months later, the City Council of Barcelona corrected and approved the institutional statement that remained in support Institutional relations between Barcelona and the government of Israel.
Finally, the gap was approved at the end of May thanks to the proposed proposal between the PSC and the Communities and which had favorable ERC votes. Both groups presented their own petitions, but in the end agreed with the joint text, which included contract provisions so that Barcelona stopped working with professional Israeli companies. It was even agreed that the final Barcelona could not accept the “Israeli pavilions” or armed companies, as well as the fact that the port does not allow ships with weapons intended for the Israeli government.
But this last part is violated. On the same Monday, a ship with a load for the port of Haifa (Israel) moored at the port of Barcelona. The same thing happened in mid -June, with a ship that transported military materials, according to the investigation of proportions.
As already occurred in these past voices, the May proposal had votes against PP and VOX, which was considered the result of a “serious mistake”. For his part, Junts abstained when they crossed promoters to break the institutional relations of the “cynic” by writing the text and, despite the fact that they were consistent with which one from the premises, they believed that this was not a clear “condemnation to Hamas” and indicated that “Israel has the right to protect itself”.
