“The most dangerous place in the world for women is their home.”
Oku.AzAccording to , this was stated in the UN global report on the fight against feminicide.
According to the report, 60% of the 85,000 women killed by men in 2023 were killed by their spouse, partner or family member.
“Data shows that women are more likely to experience fatal violence in their private lives and where they should be safest. We believe the figures in this report are just the tip of the iceberg, as we know that not all murders of women are are not reported and their causes of death are, like feminicide, not accurately classified,” said Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, Deputy Executive Director of UN-Women.
The report also highlighted studies carried out in France, South Africa and Colombia. Most women killed by their intimate partners reportedly told authorities that they had been abused before they died.
Between 2019 and 2022, 79% of homicides of women in France were committed by intimate partners or other family members. Meanwhile, other femicides caused by violence and exploitation accounted for only 5% of the total.
Data from South Africa shows that in 2020-2021, femicides outside the family accounted for 9% of all murders of women.
The figures mentioned in the report show the importance of taking more effective measures globally to eliminate violence against women.
