First there was the Sentence, then the Presentation to the people and, finally, the moment when they carried the Lord with the cross. This is the mystery which is now manifested around Our Father Jesus of Sorrowsthe leader of the Brotherhood of Hope, but at different times the story could have been different.

The canonical approval of the brotherhood, in 1940, established an institution called the Pious Brotherhood and the Brotherhood of Penance of the Holy Christ of Judgement and Mary Most Holy of Hope, but until the image of the Lord arrived, many things happened.

In 1945, the brotherhood that previously belonged to Jesús was born in San Nicolás. Pilate and later of the Sentence, so that this mystery was already in the Holy Week of Cordoba. The brotherhood commissioned Juan Martínez Cerrillo to create the Lord, who was already blessed in Santa Marina with the title of Nuestro Padre Jesús de las Penas, as the brotherhood explains on its website.

It was first released on Palm Sunday 1959, in the very personal passage of Guadamecies that the author of the image had made. He was alone and he was like that for thirty years. In the mid-80s, Esperanza began to think about a mystery and therefore also a new step.

The brotherhood of San Andrés explains on its website that it has reflected on the mystery of Presentation to the People, at the moment of “Ecce Homo” which appears in the Gospel of Saint John, and for which the image of the Lord would have an appropriate iconography.

At this time, an approach was also sought and a project was commissioned. Andres Valverdeone of the most prestigious sculptors in Córdoba. The drawing is preserved and the figures of this mystery are drawn there, including Pontius Pilate presenting Jesus to the people.

It was a step with a strong imprint baroquewith chapels with images in the center of the front, back and ribs, and cartouches in the corners. It had six sets of candelabras and was very moving, with drums, curves and angel heads. A baroque approach, different from the Renaissance that the Valverde family cultivated so much, and which included flowered jugs.

New step in imaging

The brotherhood opts for another project, which is entrusted to Antonio Diazof very similar dimensions (4.30 meters by 2.40), but with slightly straighter lines and less abundant plant decoration. It was established in 1990 and until 1992, the Lord of Sorrows was there alone.

In 1991, the brotherhood definitively promoted the new mystery which would be the moment after the Sentence, where the Lord is carried with the cross, and which was commissioned by the Cordovan sculptor Antonio Bernal. Brother Ricardo from Cordoba was among those who served as a model for the scene that the artist later captured.

In 1993, the new setting was created and the Lord of Sorrows began to walk surrounded by Roman soldiers, slaves and members of the Sanhedrin, almost forty years after its creation, and the success since that first Palm Sunday has demonstrated that he was not wrong and opened a new path for imagery Cordoba.
