The National Police detected and intervened to destroy containers containing picric acid in the laboratories of 23 educational centers secondary schools, vocational training and universities in the provinces of La Coruña and Lugo.
This substance toxic and potentially dangerous was removed due to the possibility that the passage of time could make it unstable, even with risk of explosionas explained this Thursday by the National Police in a press release.
More precisely, the agents of the TEDAX They carried out the withdrawal of 50 containers containing this acid in different states of conservation during 23 interventions carried out in centers in Lugo and La Coruña, notably in Ferrol, Santiago, Ribeira and Monforte (Lugo).
Police communication with educational centers made it possible to carry out these actions to eliminate this toxin which, over the yearsmay undergo an alteration of its properties which makes it unstable and with the potential to be explosive for his sensitivity to heatfriction or impact.
Picric acid, used in anatomy as a fixative for organic tissue samples of living beings, is also used to increase the explosive charge of trinitrotoluene, commonly known as TNT.
In fact, the TEDAX of the National Police of A Coruña also located a can suspected of containing TNT in one of the educational centers. Transported under the necessary security measures, analyzes confirmed the presence of this explosive.
All the substances seized by the specialized explosives team of the National Police Corps were destroyed in a safe and conditioned place, as indicated in a press release.
