The new highway from El Rocío to Matalascañas will have a U-turn pilot system for the third lane

The new road between Almonte and El Rocío, in the province of Huelva, will have a Reversible third rail and pilot system change of direction which was designed specifically for this road in collaboration with the sector and with the approval of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

The works on the third lane of this road, the A-483, were the subject of a call for tenders from the Junta de Andalucía for almost 26 million euros. This is work that has been delayed for years and is eagerly awaited because it is one of the most important points in terms of traffic jams and accidents. The road is traveled by more than 10,000 vehicles per year, a figure which doubles during agricultural campaigns, Rocío Pilgrimage and, of course, in summer given the continuous and enormous traffic to and from the Matalascanas Beach.

The project, carried out by the Department of Development, Territorial Articulation and Housing of the Junta, is co-financed with European funds Feder 2021-2027, and will include the installation of a third reversible rail for use reserved for buses and multiple occupancy vehicles (BUS-VAO).

The work will be carried out in a ten kilometer stretch from kilometer point 13.8 of the A-483 motorway, in Almonteat the existing roundabout in the access to El Rocío. From there, the project includes a two-lane road in each direction for the first 380 meters and a transition section to connect to the El Rocío bypass.

Removable signs and markers

The direction of travel of the reversible lane will be determined Andn depending on traffic flows and will be marked by variable message signs and removable cylindrical markers which will define the traffic boundary line. It will therefore no longer be necessary to place cones during periods of high traffic density. This is precisely the designed direction change pilot system.

Another novelty: the construction of this third track leads to the inability to turn left in an unregulated manner, such that all access to neighboring properties will be controlled by roads or service roads that connect properties to crossings. These intersections were projected as four new roundabouts, in addition to maintaining the existing access to El Rocío at kilometer 22.9.

Traffic will be controlled electronically via light signaling on porches and roads. The road will have a three-lane road 3.5 meters wide each one and two shoulders of one and a half meters.

Environmentally friendly

As pointed out by the Junta de Andalucía, the solution adopted for this road was particularly respectful of the environment. taking into account the environment in which it operates.

In fact, the project of the third lane of the A-483 was subject to mandatory environmental treatment, which obtained a favorable binding report from the Territorial Delegation for Sustainable Development of Huelva on the request for Unified Environmental Authorization.

The action also aligns with the strategic lines of the Andalusian Transport and Mobility Infrastructure Plan (PITMA), approved by Decree 540/2022, which envisages the development of sustainable and intermodal infrastructure among which the construction of dedicated public transport platforms like the one that will be built on the Almonte-Matalascañas highway.

The A-483 motorway belongs to the interregional network of the Autonomous Network of the Andalusian Motorway Network and has an approximate length of 41 kilometers. Its origin is located at the junction with the A-49 near Bollullos del Condado and It ends at the intersection with the A-494 highway in Matalascañas.

The first 14 kilometers of this road are a highway and from this point until the end the road presents two sections of conventional motorway and one section of motorway (variant of El Rocío). The average daily intensity is high, with peaks marked in summer and during the celebration of the Rocío pilgrimage.
