The new strain of Covid turned out to be more contagious than all the others

A new coronavirus strain that is spreading rapidly across Europe appears to be more contagious than previous variants. According to experts, the new XEC subvariant, descended from Omicron, could soon become the dominant strain on the European continent.

This is reported by the Daily Express.

What is known about the new strain of COVID-19

The XEC strain is a hybrid of two Omicron subvariants, KS.1.1 (FLiRT) and KP.3.3. A unique feature of this strain are mutations in the virus structures, which make it more capable of penetrating human cells and spreading rapidly.

Experts say the XEC strain is only just beginning to spread, but is expected to become the main circulating variant of the virus in the coming weeks and months. The variant was first identified on June 15 in Germany and there are now fears that case numbers will rise dramatically with the arrival of colder weather.

Symptoms you should not ignore

The main symptoms of the new XEC strain are similar to those of colds and flu:

  • dyspnoea
  • High temperature
  • Constant cough
  • Loss of smell or taste.
  • Feeling very tired or exhausted

Although most people recover within a few weeks, for some the illness may take longer and cause complications.
